Reading are set to welcome back two key youngsters as John Ryan and Abraham Kanu edge closer to a return to training following months of injury rehabilitation.
What happened to John Ryan?
The 22-year-old defender, a regular for Noel Hunt’s under-21s during their Berks and Bucks Senior Cup-winning 2023/24 season, suffered a knee injury in pre-season 2024. After returning to action in 2025/26 with six senior appearances in the Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy, he picked up another injury in November, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. Despite limited game time, Reading extended his contract last season. Manager Leam Richardson stressed the importance of patience, saying the club must ensure Ryan returns 'fit and available' to benefit his long-term development.
How has Abraham Kanu progressed?
Kanu, who impressed during a loan spell at Forest Green Rovers last season with 36 appearances under Robbie Savage, has been sidelined for months after sustaining an injury. Richardson confirmed the defender is at the 'latter end' of his rehabilitation and could soon return to the pitch. The Royals boss also revealed clubs have enquired about Kanu’s availability, though he aims to assess the player firsthand before making any decisions.
What’s next for Reading?
With the 2026/27 season approaching, Reading finished 12th in League One last term, amassing 63 points from 46 games (16W-15D-15L) and a +4 goal difference (64 scored, 60 conceded). Their recent form saw two draws and three losses in their last five matches, including a 0-1 defeat to Blackpool on 2026-05-02. The return of Ryan and Kanu could provide a timely boost as the Royals prepare for their next fixture away to Wigan on 2026-10-17.
