James Oliver-Pearce has left Reading to become assistant coach at Danish club Sønderjyske Fodbold. The 34-year-old Englishman, who helped the Royals avoid relegation in 2023/24, joins his first club outside the UK after spells at AFC Wimbledon, Hull City and Sheffield United.
What did Oliver-Pearce achieve at Reading?
Oliver-Pearce joined Reading in 2022 from AFC Wimbledon, working under Paul Ince and Noel Hunt before becoming a key assistant to Ruben Selles in 2023. The Royals sat nine points adrift of safety in November 2023 but rallied to finish 17th in League One. Last season, they pushed for promotion, finishing 12th with 63 points (16W-15D-15L), scoring 64 goals and conceding 60.
Why is this move significant?
Sønderjyske Fodbold sports director Casper Daather praised Oliver-Pearce’s tactical skills and match preparation. "He brings an international perspective from one of Europe’s most competitive leagues," Daather said. The move marks Oliver-Pearce’s first overseas experience, and he expressed excitement about challenging himself in Denmark.
What’s next for Reading?
Reading finished last season 12th in League One, four points behind the playoffs. Their recent form was poor, with no wins in their last five matches (LLDDL). They’ll look to rebuild under new management ahead of their next fixture at Wigan on 17 October.
