Reading FC's major stadium redevelopment plans have taken a significant step forward after essential works were approved by the local council. The decision on 9 September clears the way for the Royal Elm Park project to proceed at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Councillors gave the green light to the detailed plans, which include 600 apartments, a hotel, an ice rink and a convention centre. The original project was first submitted and received full planning permission later. The latest approval covers the necessary specifics for construction to begin.
Councillor John Ennis praised the stadium's sponsors for their support of the club. "They have been very good for Reading FC in times of trouble, so we should respect their hard work in renaming the stadium even though it's a longer word," he said.
Planning officer Alison Amoah confirmed the developer is RFC Prop Co Ltd. Councillor Micky Leng noted ongoing links to the club's former owner. "I have heard the company is still something to do with Dai Yongge, I think he's still involved in it, so you'll have to keep an eye on it," Leng said. The company's directors are based in Germany and Thailand.
The development is branded Royal Elm Park in honour of the club's former Elm Park ground. The current stadium was renamed from the Madejski Stadium to the Select Car Leasing Stadium in July 2021.
The news arrives as Reading sit 14th in League One with 7 points from their opening five matches. Their recent form shows three wins and two defeats, with the next test a home fixture against Notts County on 19 September.
