Jeff Hendrick believes Reading’s aim this season must be to reach the play-offs. The former loanee, who made 45 appearances for the club, warned that stop-start form could make building momentum difficult.
Hendrick spent the 2022/23 season at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, scoring four goals before the club suffered relegation. The 34-year-old midfielder is clear on the target for Leam Richardson’s side. "That’s got to be the aim for Reading, the play-offs," Hendrick said. "They’ll be disappointed if they don’t get play-offs."
His comments come as Reading sit eighth in League One with 10 points from six games. The inconsistent start Hendrick referenced is visible in a recent run of three wins and two losses. A 2-0 victory over Notts County last week, with Jack Marriott scoring twice, was a positive step.
Reading’s next challenge is a trip to face Wycombe Wanderers, who are 14th, this Saturday. With top scorer Marriott netting six times already, the foundation for a push is there. The club’s current standings position shows they are within touching distance of the top six, five points behind leaders Bradford. Hendrick’s message is a reminder of the expectation surrounding a club looking to climb back up the leagues.
