Reading's defensive resilience secured a hard-fought point in a 0-0 draw at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. The result extends the Royals' unbeaten league run to four matches and leaves them sixth in the League One table with 21 points from 12 games, four points behind leaders Huddersfield Town.
A key block from Udoka Godwin-Malife in the 54th minute typified the performance, as he slid in to deny Will Evans a clear shooting chance. Jeriel Dorsett, who played both at left-back and centre-back, was singled out for his defensive contribution. "I was worried for him coming into this game today but, defensively, he was absolutely solid, whether at left-back or in the centre of defence," said teammate Lewis Wing.
Youth and tactical shifts
Josh Knight made his league debut for Reading in a back four that was reshuffled after Paudie O'Connor was forced off with an elbow injury in the 32nd minute. The hosts started brighter, but Reading grew into the contest. A Lewis Wing free-kick caused panic in the Plymouth box early on, while Kyreece Lisbie, who has four goals in his last four appearances, shot wide after being put through by Randell Williams.
Manager Ruben Selles made attacking changes in the second half aimed to find a winner. Daniel Kyerewaa and the returning Jack Marriott, the club's top scorer this season with eight goals in seven appearances, were introduced. Marriott had an effort blocked soon after coming on, and Josh Stokes combined with him and Wing to create another late chance that was snuffed out by the Plymouth defence.
A point earned
Despite the late pressure, a winner proved elusive. The draw means Reading have taken seven points from their last three League One matches, following home wins over Leyton Orient and Barnsley. Their next challenge is a significant one, an away fixture against Oxford United, who sit third in the standings.
Over 1,300 travelling fans witnessed a performance that was more positive than many recent away displays. With key players returning and defensive organisation improving, Reading will aim to carry this momentum into their next fixture. The squad's full fixtures list shows the trip to Oxford is set for Wednesday, 4 November. Plymouth Argyle will travel to face Shrewsbury Town on the same evening.
