Thames Valley Police is mounting a major and highly visible operation for the League One derby between Oxford United and Reading at the Kassam Stadium on Wednesday evening. Dispersal orders will be in force across Oxford, Didcot and Reading from 11am on matchday until 1am the following morning to prevent disorder.

The comprehensive police plan involves a significant deployment of specialist resources. This includes mounted officers, police dogs, the tactical cycle unit, and drone teams to monitor crowds. Superintendent Jennifer Hogben, the tactical commander for the operation, stated the force's primary aim is to ensure a safe environment for all supporters, residents, and visitors. "We will not tolerate violence, disorder, antisocial behaviour or criminality of any kind," Hogben said. "Anyone intent on causing disruption can expect a swift response from officers."

Police powers under Section 35 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 will be used. These orders grant officers the authority to direct individuals to leave designated areas and to require the removal of face coverings. The specific zones covered include Oxford city centre, areas surrounding Didcot Parkway railway station, and locations near Reading railway station.

The fixture, kicking off at 19:45 GMT, is the first Thames Valley derby of the season and the first meeting between the clubs since February 2024. It was originally scheduled for August but was postponed at the request of the police due to concerns over available resources. Superintendent Hogben also issued a direct appeal to parents and guardians, urging them to be aware of their children's whereabouts on the evening of the match due to the significant interest and large crowd expected.

Match context

Reading travel to Oxford sitting sixth in the League One standings with 21 points from 12 games, just four points off the automatic promotion places. They approach the derby following a 2-1 victory over Barnsley last week, which forms part of a recent run of three wins from their last five league matches. The team's next assignment after the derby is another challenging away trip, to fifth-placed Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Thames Valley Police emphasised that the operational plans have been developed in close collaboration with both football clubs, British Transport Police, and local authorities. Supporters of both teams are strongly advised to arrive at the Kassam Stadium in good time for the match and to follow all instructions given by stewards and police officers on the day. The force reiterated that the overwhelming majority of fans are well-behaved and that the operation is targeted at a small minority who may seek to cause trouble.
