Royals Secure Local Derby Win

Reading FC edged past Wycombe Wanderers in a closely fought EFL Trophy match, winning 3-1 in the shootout after the match ended 1-1. The Royals were made to work for their victory, with Jack Stevens producing the decisive save from Luke Leahy in the shoot-out.

What Happened?

The match began with Wycombe creating the first clear opening inside five minutes, with Micah Olabiyi's effort being saved by Stevens. Reading responded quickly, with Emmanuel Osho forcing goalkeeper Theo Van Sas into action after Haydon Roberts' cross from the left found the winger in space. Ashqar Ahmed impressed during the opening stages and went close from the edge of the area.

Why It Matters for Reading

Osho remained Reading's most lively outlet in the first half and saw another effort parried by Van Sas midway through the half. Jacob Brown followed in, but could not convert from a tight angle. Paddy Lane also tested Van Sas with a half-volley, while Roberts' driving run down the left created another chance for Lane, whose effort lacked the power to beat the Wycombe goalkeeper.

What Comes Next?

Reading began the second half with more defensive resolve, with Boyd Beacroft producing an important tackle to prevent a dangerous Leahy cross reaching the six-yard box. Wycombe increased the pressure after the hour mark and Leahy headed straight at Stevens from a corner, before the visitors made their breakthrough on 70 minutes. Quitirna cut inside from the right and struck an effort towards goal. Beacroft attempted to clear, but the power of the shot carried the ball into the net to give Wycombe the lead.

The Turning Point

Reading hit back six minutes later through Fraser. The midfielder drove forward with space in front of him, found a pocket outside the area and struck a low effort home to level the contest. Daniel Kyerewaa had a golden opportunity to win it late on after driving into the area, but his touch let him down at the vital moment and the ball was eventually worked back by Luke Howard.

The Final Whistle

Savage then fired over from distance in stoppage time as Reading searched for a late winner, but the tie went to penalties. Stevens proved the hero in the shoot-out, saving Leahy's spot-kick as Reading sealed a 3-1 victory on penalties.
