Reading have secured the future of young forward Sean Patton with a new contract that runs until the summer of 2028. The deal underlines the club's strategy of developing and retaining its most promising homegrown talent.
Patton, a 20-year-old striker, joined Reading's under-21s from Derry City in 2025. He has since made eight first-team appearances for the Royals, scoring one goal. His progress was highlighted by a productive loan spell at Aldershot Town last season, where he netted five times in six National League matches.
Injury and international call
His development hit a setback with a pre-season injury, but he returned to action and earned his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s in March. Manager Leam Richardson has been clear about valuing the club's academy products, and this new deal is a clear signal of that intent.
"We're really pleased to get Sean tied down," Richardson told the club's official website. The contract provides stability for a player seen as part of Reading's long-term plans.
The news comes as Reading sit seventh in League One, with 12 points from their opening eight games. Patton will be aiming to force his way into the squad as the season progresses, with his future now firmly at the Select Car Leasing Stadium until 2028.
