Reading are eyeing a move for 31-year-old centre-half Dan Scarr, who has been linked with the Royals by transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke. The club is looking to bolster Leam Richardson’s backline after Scarr’s limited playing time at Wrexham.
Scarr has appeared in 44 games for Wrexham since joining the Welsh side from Plymouth Argyle in August 2024. He has struggled for minutes in the Championship, with Phil Parkinson favouring Callum Doyle, former Royal Dominic Hyam and new signing Zak Vyner in a back-three formation. The Royals believe Scarr’s experience could provide the solidity Richardson needs.
Leam Richardson has repeatedly emphasised the need for an experienced centre-half, and Scarr’s profile matches that requirement. He is a former Birmingham City and Walsall defender who helped Plymouth Argyle win promotion from League One in 2023, making 31 appearances in all competitions before moving to Wrexham and aiding their promotion.
Scarr’s career began in non-league football with Worcester City, Causeway United, Redditch United and Stourbridge. He helped Stourbridge reach the FA Cup third round in 2017 before signing for Birmingham City. During his time at Birmingham he spent a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers.
His breakthrough came at Walsall, where he made nearly 100 appearances between 2019 and 2021. The defender’s consistent performances earned him a move to Wrexham, where he has been a regular squad member, albeit with limited starts in the Championship.
Reading’s interest in Scarr reflects a broader strategy to add depth and experience to their defence. The Royals are reportedly monitoring the transfer market closely and may offer a competitive bid should the defender’s contract with Wrexham allow a move.
