Petr Cech has marked the 20-year anniversary of the skull fracture he suffered during a Premier League match at Reading's Madejski Stadium. The Chelsea goalkeeper collided with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt seconds into the game on 14 October 2006, an incident that required emergency surgery and changed player safety in football.

Cech underwent surgery at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital and returned to action three months later wearing protective headgear. That helmet became one of the sport's most recognisable symbols, born from a career-defining moment. He said the recovery was difficult and filled with doubt, but he learned valuable lessons on the journey.

Cech's lasting legacy

Reflecting on social media, Cech said the day greatly impacted the Premier League, fans, his family and himself. He expressed gratitude to the medical teams for giving him the chance to live and continue playing. That allowed him to break records, win trophies and, most importantly, become a father.

The incident prompted the Premier League to change rules around player medical safety. Paramedics have been present at every top-flight match since, a move Cech said has saved many lives. He holds no resentment towards Stephen Hunt, and the pair agreed long ago to leave the incident behind them.

Hunt's perspective

Stephen Hunt, then a Reading winger, has also reflected on the tackle. He said he went in for the impact as any coach would have expected, acknowledging he was out of position. Hunt, who had spells at Crystal Palace and Brentford before his Reading debut, said the moment defined his public identity. "Even to this day, 'you're the guy who did that'," he said. "There is no forgetting it because he wears the helmet." He stated he wishes it never happened but carries no guilt, maintaining a clear conscience.

The moment remains a significant chapter in Reading's Premier League history. It occurred during a period when the club was establishing itself in the top flight, a context far removed from the current campaign where Reading sit 7th in League One with 15 points from 10 games. Their recent form shows one win, two draws and two defeats from the last five, including a 1-0 loss at Wigan last time out.

Attention now turns to the next challenge at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, a home fixture against Leyton Orient this Saturday.
