The club has already signed four players this summer: Udoka Godwin-Malife (Burton Albion), Kyreece Lisbie (Colchester United) and Jacob Brown (Luton Town) as permanent signings, and Bristol City's Joshua Stokes on a season-long loan. Stokes has already hit the ground running after scoring on his debut in round one of the Carabao Cup against Bromley on Saturday.

Speaking about the club’s recruitment plans and the importance of brining in players that add value, the Reading boss told The Reading Chronicle: “You’ve got to be really mindful of who you add to the group.

“We could sign three players tomorrow, today, if we really wanted to, but that’s not what we want. We want to sign the right three players, so sometimes it takes a little bit more time.

“There’s a lot of moving parts, as you can imagine, but we’ll stay strong to our beliefs, we’ll stay strong to what we want, because that will only benefit us in the future.”

Richardson also explained that Reading are aiming to build a younger squad with players who can develop alongside the club, rather than repeatedly being forced into short-term recruitment decisions.

He added: “We want to put layers on this football club now. You can see from the signings, from the younger lads coming in, that we want to make sure we’ve got assets on the pitch, but not only that, but that can grow with the club as well, into different levels, which is my job to try and bring them together.

“So we can be a proactive football club and not be a reactive one, which we’ve had to be in the past.”

Reading FC chairman and owner Rob Couhig has said that the Royals are likely to make further signings before the transfer window closes, but insisted the club will only recruit players capable of improving Leam Richardson’s existing squad.

Richardson echoed the sentiment.
